In yoga, asana refers to the posture.  Practice of asanas is required to be able to remain in a position attentively and comfortably for an extended time for devotional practices such as mantra repetition (japa), worship and meditation. The spine should remain straight while practicing any asana during meditation.

Asana is the third of the eight limbs of classical ashtanga yoga as taught by sage Patanjali.  The first and critically  important limb is yama and niyama - what not to do and what to do in life.  This is required to align the body system prior to moving on to awakening,  cleansing and rejuvenating each muscle, cell and the mind.  Resting in asanas has healing properties, bringing back life force and re-establishing health.  Physical movement is connected with consciousness.  Asanas prepare the body for meditation by improving flexibility and strengthening weak parts.

Hatha yoga describes 84 different asanas relating to physical and mental health and meditative poses.  Practising asanas activates and makes the entire body activated.

This results in recollection of our connection to our inner selves, God and the divine.  The ultimate aim of of yoga is is moksha or liberation from repeated birth and death in samsara (the cycle of repeated birth and death in the physical world
